History

Established in 1854, the Mississippi School for the Deaf is the state’s official school for all children in the state who are deaf or hard of hearing. From the earliest detection of a hearing problem, we can provide children with the communication skills and confidence they need to live happy, productive lives.

Our dedicated teachers are certified professionals, recognized as leaders in their field of instruction. They help each student reach their full potential by providing an excellent education in a friendly and caring environment.

At age four, children join us on our beautiful Jackson campus, where we provide round-the-clock supervision in a safe, cheerful, residential setting. Meals and health care are also free of charge.

Beginning with pre-kindergarten, students are challenged in a stimulating learning environment through curriculum in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Physical Education. We also provide speech therapy, audiology, counseling, occupational and physical therapy.

Our students have access to the most up-to-date educational materials available. They benefit from our well-equipped language labs filled with interesting books, computers and wonderful educational resources. Students enjoy participating in football, basketball and many other extracurricular activities.
